Review in Smallwoods, issue 44 (Autumn 2011) You’d be forgiven for assuming that [A Handbook of Scotland's Trees] is only for Scots at home (or ex-pats north of the border), but anyone doing so would be missing a little gem. Not only does the book list more than 40 species, but it opens with useful chapters on planting, selection and silviculture. There is a particularly inspiring chapter on No Fence Planting (NFP), which is used to grow trees on grazing land, without the need to remove the large herbivores. This is work that’s been pioneered by Steve Watson and his Tree Shepherds group in Snowdonia, but is now being used elsewhere so that pasture land can be grazed while a new crop of trees is introduced. .... This is a beautifully published book, and good value at £9.99. Ask for it for Christmas, whether or not you live in Scotland!
